I’m Brandy and I’ve been photographing kids and families professionally in Calgary for over 10 years. I love bright, colourful images, lots of laughing and having fun while we make your portraits. In my experience, owning the digital images is what most parents want and I am happy to make that happen. I also have prints and canvases available for those that prefer a more custom experience. I have a studio just outside Calgary in Watermark (next to Tuscany in the NW) for maternity, newborn and baby photography, and I also do on-location sessions for your ultimate convenience.

I have two daughters, Emma (13) and Charlotte (9) and one more on the way! I have a son named Max (1) and a fiancé named Josh and maybe someday we will actually get married. We have two little dogs, a Chihuahua named Rosie and a Morkie named Ollie. I turned 40 last year and boy do I feel a little bananas for deciding to have another baby at 41. Work or home, I can be sure I’m always around kids! When Josh and I get married, (notice I say when and not if even though we’ve been engaged for a year and keep having kids but no wedding plans, but I digress) it will be the second marriage for both of us. Divorce is kind of rotten but sometimes it’s for the best and I think the girls can honestly say that they are happier knowing their mom and dad are happier. We are a pretty cool blended family, we’ve even all done a family vacation together with me, Josh, the kids, my ex-husband and his girlfriend. I’m pretty proud of all of us for being so grown up.

I volunteer my services to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation every year, I take photographs of wonderful kids that the Foundation then is able to use all year in their fundraising efforts for the hospital. Along with my kids, it’s one of the things in my life that gives me the most joy. When my daughter Emma was two and a half years old, she had her first seizure. You can read more about it here, but to sum up – she was diagnosed with epilepsy as a small child but has since grown out of it. It was some of the scariest times of my life, and the lovely people at the Alberta Children’s Hospital made such a huge impact on me. They had limitless patience and unending kindness. When I felt we were out of the woods and her health wasn’t an all-consuming thought, I contacted the hospital to offer my photography services for anything they should need.

I’m so grateful that the ACHF took me up on my offer. Since 2010, I’ve been photographing the most amazing kids at the hospital. The foundation uses real kids, real success stories from the Alberta Children’s Hospital. I can’t even begin to describe the joy and magic these children have brought into my life. These little people are some of the toughest on the planet. They’ve been through so much, at such young ages – but they continue to smile, to laugh, to help the hospital by sharing their stories. The women that work for the foundation are some of the kindest, funniest, bravest people you could ever hope to meet. They spend their days raising the funds that make it possible for these kids to be success stories. I feel passionate about a few different charities but this cause is so near and dear to my heart, it’s so fulfilling to me to be able to help year after year. Please check out the gallery to take a look at some of these extraordinary kids!

I’ve recently restructured my pricing to include at least one digital image in every session. It’s been a long time coming, but something I feel very strongly about. I have always run my business in the way that I would like to be treated. (Hence emails usually before the phone) When I hire photographers to shoot my family, I always always always want digitals. This used to be really only a photographer thing, most of my clients preferred prints and really wouldn’t know what to do with a digital file. But times are so different than they were 11 years ago. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, photos are EVERYWHERE. My go-to place to share photos of my life is Instagram. Why should the parents that hire me be any different? This is a digital age and I want you to enjoy your pictures. If that means making them your cover photo or posting them on Insta, then I want that to be your prerogative. I’m really excited by my new way of life around here and I hope you are too! We are going to create the same amazing photos, you now just have easier access to them. It’s win-win!

In the past decade with Fresh Sugar Photography, I’ve had the opportunity to do some pretty awesome stuff. One of my photos was the cover of a novel. I wrote some stuff for a photography book. I won some awards and got written up in some magazines. And all of that is SUPER COOL AND IT TOTALLY BLEW MY MIND. But when I look back at my business, what I’m actually most proud of is how many repeat clients I get. I see some families year after year after year and it’s absolutely incredible. It’s why I created the newest gallery The Now and Then. Take a look at some familiar faces and how they’ve grown up right before my camera.

If all of this sounds like someone you’d like to work with to create some honest, beautiful and fun portraits of your family, please contact me at info@freshsugar.ca and we can talk more about a session for you, your kids, or your whole family. I truly would love to hear from you.
